Did you know John Nathaniel Nauss?

John Nauss is the subject of an investigation into allegations that he sexually abused numerous children in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Nauss is currently facing 19 criminal charges after a months-long investigation by Bridgewater Police Service revealed that Nauss sexually abused numerous children while attending and serving within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) church in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

Nauss is believed to have abused children across Canada for decades, beginning as early as the 1970s. Nauss was serving as a Temple Ordinance Worker at the Toronto Ontario Temple in Brampton, Ontario when he was charged. Investigators believe it is highly likely that there are additional victims in Ontario who were sexually abused by Nauss.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“LDS Church”) is a global religious denomination headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States of America. In Canada, there are over 200,000 members of the LDS Church and around 500 congregations—one of which is the Bridgewater Church where Nauss worked and preyed on children.

Although the LDS Church claims it has strengthened its child abuse protection policies and procedures, a 2022 investigation by the Associated Press revealed evidence suggesting that the LDS Church was misusing its child abuse “hotline” to divert sexual abuse accusations against members away from law enforcement to church attorneys who then used the clergy–penitent privilege laws to avoid child sexual abuse reporting requirements—potentially allowing perpetrators to continue to harm children.
