Police: Roseburg attorney arrested, charged with multiple sex crimes
ROSEBURG, Ore. — A Roseburg attorney faces accusations he repeatedly raped a teenage girl has been arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes, Oregon State Police report.
On January 3, detectives from the OSP Criminal Investigations Division in Roseburg completed the criminal investigation, arresting and lodging 37-year-old Sean Michael Handlery.
Handlery, who police say is from the Roseburg area, was lodged in the Douglas County Jail and charged with multiple sex crimes including third degree rape, third degree sodomy, third degree sexual abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, sexual misconduct and luring a minor.
At the Douglas County Jail website, Handlery’s record lists a total of 50 charges, all sex-related.
Court records detail evidence suggesting Handlery began having sex with the teen in July 2015. The abuse continued through February of the next year.
Investigators obtained messages between the two. In some chronicled in court documents, Handlery indicates he knows the girl was under 16 when the two started having sexual intercourse, and urges her not to reveal that the two are having sex.
The law firm where Handlery worked issued a statement Thursday.
“Sean Michael Handlery is a former associate attorney of this firm,” the law firm of Randy C. Rubin, Attorney at Law, PC, said in a statement. “His employment has been terminated as of this date. No one in this firm had any knowledge of the allegations against Mr. Handlery until they were made public by the Oregon State Police after he was arrested on January 3, 2018. This firm is in the process of notifying all of Mr. Handlery’s current clients. This firm will be fully cooperating with any ongoing investigations regarding Mr. Handlery.”
