Derren Justin Evans was granted $25,000 bond Thursday morning over the objections of the high school freshman he’s accused of sexually assaulting.

The Providence Christian Academy student and her father are fearful that once Evans posts bond, they could run into him on the street, said Assistant District Attorney Karen West.

Evans was arrested in May after the student told a school counselor that Evans repeatedly groped her, forcibly kissed her and asked for nude photos over Snapchat. Evans was a long-term substitute teacher and coach at Providence Christian Academy at the time of the alleged abuse.

Evans is prohibited from contacting the girl or her father while out on bond; if he does, he will be held in jail without bond until his case concludes.

“I’ve told him if he sees her in the community, he is to literally turn around and run,” Evan’s lawyer Stacy Levy said while requesting bond for her client. “He is in good shape. He’s a physical education teacher. He knows how to get gone.”

Evans is also barred from entering Providence Christian Academy.

Levy said she believes Evans is not guilty of the accusations.
