Van Len Granger of Grants Pass Accused of Sex Abuse
A Grants Pass man accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy was arrested on December 21, 2015 for Sex Abuse 1 and Sodomy 2. He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail with pending charges in Douglas County.
Oregon State Police arrested 47-year-old Van Len Granger after receiving a report from the Department of Human Services about possible sex abuse. OSP received the report on December 16, 2015.
Granger is currently a fifth-grade teacher at Manzanita Elementary School and has been placed on paid administrative leave by the Three Rivers School District. OSP said Granger worked as a mentor to the child he allegedly abused.
Granger is accused in Jackson County of committing sodomy and sex abuse against a 12-year-old former student he was mentoring while at a Medford movie theater, according to the motion to reduce bail. The same boy has accused Granger of another incident of sex abuse at a retreat or camp in Douglas County.
The report says Granger had unsupervised visits with the victim from January through December 2015.
Granger’s preliminary hearing in Jackson County Court was on January 25th.
Van Len Granger’s bail had been set at $1 million, but on Tuesday, the judge reduced it to $750,000. The defense argued the bail was too excessive because Granger may be faced with another bail amount out of Douglas County — if the district attorney chooses to indict him. The next court date is set for February 26th.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
