A woman told KATU News her 9-year-old daughter sound asleep in her room when a stranger broke in and sexually assaulted her.

She said her two young daughters shared a room on the first floor of the Clackamas Trails Apartments on SE Cook Court in unincorporated Milwaukie.

Last Sunday night, while the girls were sleeping on their bunk beds, a stranger crawled through a window, turned off the lights and sexually assaulted the 9-year-old girl. Her 5-year-old sister was asleep during the assault.

After being pinned down by the stranger, the girl managed to escape and run to her mom’s room. When they realized what happened, the girl’s dad took his gun and went into the bedroom, but the suspect had already escaped through the window.

Deputies were able to find the suspect’s fingerprints, the mom told KATU. The little girl was able to recall what her attacker looked like, and helped deputies create a sketch of what he looked like.

The family has since moved out of that apartment, and is now living in a hotel.

NEIGHBOR REACTION

Neighbors say deputies went door-to-door Sunday morning asking tenants if they noticed anything suspicious.

“We thought we were in a somewhat safe neighborhood,” Rikki Smith said. “The fact that it’s a 9-year-old, is really terrifying.”

Smith lives with her mom at the complex. They say they take precautions in their home to prevent being a target.

“We have bars on all of our windows just to make sure,” Smith said. “We always make sure that the doors are locked even if someone is home.”

Darryl Molale didn’t recognize the suspect in the police sketch, but said he was going to be more vigilant, especially because he has siblings that are about the same age as the victim.

“The fact that happened right under my nose… it’s kind of scary you know,” Molale said. “If I see something crazy going down, I will try my best to stop it or do what is right.”

A friend has set up a GoFundMe for the family of the little girl, to help the family pay for a hotel and relocating fees.
