Disgraced Portland Boy Scouts Troop Leader: Meet George "Bud" Frie, Jr.

Back in 1966, when he was approximately 43, Portland Boy Scouts Troop 89 Scoutmaster George O. Frie, Jr. was asked to resign his post with the troop.  The reason? According to official Boy Scouts “Perversion File” details, he admitted to “improper advances and conduct with boys.”

On paper, this 130 pound, 5’6″ tall man was a perfect candidate for leading Boy Scouts.  He was an avid camper, mountain climber and outdoorsman,and being proficient in these qualities were some of the very things to which every Boy Scout strives.  Despite these positive qualities, Frie had a secret, he developed a habit of molesting unsuspecting Scouts, often while camping.

After being placed on the BSA confidential files and forced to resign in Oregon, Frie attempted sign up to lead Scouts in Colorado, but Boy Scouts officials caught wind of his application and asked the Colorado council to reject his application, though offering them no specific details on why they could not accept it.

Although he died in his 80s, Frie was convicted of molesting kids and went to prison for some time in the 1980s and 90s.
