Oregon prison guard accused of custodial sexual misconduct

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – A male corrections officer at a prison primarily for women faces multiple counts of sexual misconduct, Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Corrections said.

State police arrested Edgar Mickles, 50, on Wednesday.

Detectives booked Mickles at the Washington County Jail on 8 counts of Custodial Sexual Misconduct I, 3 counts of Custodial Sexual Misconduct II and 1 count of Official Misconduct 1.

The investigation started in February when the Department of Corrections notified Oregon State Police of potential misconduct by Mickles at Coffee Creek Correctional Center in Wilsonville.

Coffee Creek has 713 medium security and 640 minimum security beds for female offenders. The facility also has 432 intake beds for male offenders.

Mickles began his career as a Correctional Officer at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville in May 2013, the state said.

Details about his alleged crime were not immediately available.

“DOC has a zero tolerance policy for sexual abuse and sexual harassment. All allegations of both are reported and thoroughly investigated. If evidence supports the case, prosecution is imminent. Staff members convicted of sexual misconduct will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the agency said in a press release. “DOC strictly adheres to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. Every state corrections department, juvenile corrections agency, private prison, federal prison, and jail has an obligation to comply with PREA standards, which seek to detect, prevent, and eliminate sexual abuse and sexual harassment in correctional settings.”
