Union Local High School Teacher Faces Criminal Sexual Abuse Charge
Article from The Intelligencer.
BELMONT — The Belmont County Prosecutor’s Office released more information Friday about allegations of inappropriate conduct against a Union Local School District teacher.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan said the charge is based on the fact Cordes was in a position of authority over the alleged victim, rather than upon the student’s age. Prosecutor Dan Fry recently explained that in Ohio, a statute covers allegations in which the accused is a teacher, school administrator, coach or otherwise in authority.
Cordes has not been taken into police custody, but she is expected to appear voluntarily for arraignment as ordered by the court.
If convicted, Cordes would face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and designation as a Tier 3 sex offender. Flanagan added the prosecutor’s office expects no further charges in the case at this time.
He said the offense allegedly occurred within the last month.
The Union Local Board of Education addressed the matter during Thursday’s board meeting, prior to the release of Cordes’ name or information regarding the nature of the alleged offense. Superintendent Ben Porter said district officials were notified of the allegations Wednesday and contacted authorities. He reported the school district was cooperating with the Bethesda Police Department as the investigating agency, but he could not be reached for further comment Friday.
Bethesda Police Chief Eric Smith said only that the investigation is ongoing, although he said further information may be released as the investigation progresses.
