Famed BSA National Camp Philmont Subject of Sexual Abuse Lawsuit

Complaint alleges negligence of sex abuse against Boy Scouts of America officials

July 25, 2013   Albuquerque, New Mexico–

A former Boy Scout filed suit today against the Philmont Scout Ranch division of the Boy Scouts of America for its role in the alleged sexual abuse of the plaintiff by his scoutmaster, Steven Woodard.

The plaintiff, filing under the pseudonym John Doe, alleges he was sexually abused by Woodard, while camping at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico with his Boy Scout Troop 1 from Muncie, Illinois.

The case was filed today in the Second Judicial District in Bernalillo County by attorney Brad D. Hall of Albuquerque. Hall, along with attorney Kelly Clark, from the Portland law firm of O’Donnell Clark & Crew, will be representing the plaintiff in the case. Attorney Paul Mones of Portland, Oregon is also on the case.

All three attorneys frequently represent adult victims of childhood sexual abuse against institutions such as the Catholic Church, LDS Church, and various other youth-serving organizations.  Clark and Mones won an almost 20 million dollar verdict against the Boy Scouts in 2010 involving a man who had been sexually abused in the 1980s.  Last October, as a result of this Portland case, thousands of the Boy Scouts of America’s Ineligible Volunteer “Perversion” files, which documented childhood sexual abuse of children by scout leaders, were released to the public. These files, from the period 1965-1985, can be found at http://kellyclarkattorney.com/files.

Added Clark, “The case is, as far as we know, the first case to focus on Camp Philmont and its role as a place where scout leaders would frequently abuse scouts.  Given Philmont’s prominence in the BSA structure, we think that fact significant.”
